Due to disagreements with the club, struggling with the Argentine's desire to move to Marseille, Maradona enters the field only in the second half with the number 16 shirt. Under 2-0 at the end of the first half, Napoli manages to overturn the game by winning 3-2 thanks also to the decisive contribution of Maradona.

Eugenio Bersellini's team, last year on the Beneamata bench, reached fifth place in the league and success in the 35th edition of the Italian Cup, won by the neroazzurri in the double final against Turin. On the third to last day of the Serie A season 1988/89, a Napoli struggling with serious training problems is engaged in the Marche, with only 14 players available, against an Ascoli thirsty for salvation points. On the score of 2-0 in favor of Ascoli, 10 minutes from the end, Careca was forced to leave. Ottavio Bianchi has only Francesco Romano, injured and not at his best, and the second goalkeeper Raffaele Di Fusco. A Napoli full of absences goes to the Marche with only 14 players, including the second blue goalkeeper.
