In the 2001/2002 season, Empoli, then in Serie B, gained promotion to Serie A. Di Natale, historical flag of Udinese, played with Empoli for 5 seasons scoring 49 goals, including 18 in the season of return to Serie A. Although he has never played for a top team, Di Natale is the sixth highest scorer in the history of Serie A.
