The closest disappointment in that period, after almost ten years of domination, was the failure to qualify for the 1984 European Championships. Netherlands and Spain are playing for access to the final stage. More than the results on the pitch, it was the goal difference that decided the Iberians' arrival in the next round, which with 90 minutes from the end was definitely in favor of the Dutch. In the last match of the group, played against Malta, Spain won with a sensational 12 to 1 (a victory with 11 goals was needed), giving way to endless controversy.
