After the 78 World Cup, due to the decline of the generation of the great champions of the seventies, the Netherlands embarked on a crisis that will last almost a decade. Having qualified for the final phase of the 1980 European championship, the Oranje were eliminated before the semifinals, losing the decisive match against West Germany, then winners of the event.
