Atalanta in 1987/1988, despite playing in Serie B, had reached the final of the Italian Cup and then also played in the European cups, reaching the semi-finals of the Cup Winners' Cup. In the 1988/1989 season, as a newly-promoted player in Serie A, the team immediately qualified for Europe.
