Historical Anecdote

Steve McManaman played a key role for England during the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. A skillful winger, he was deployed on the left side of midfield by manager Glenn Hoddle. England exited the tournament in the round of 16 after a dramatic penalty shootout loss to Argentina, in a match also remembered for David Beckham’s red card. McManaman was already a Liverpool star and would join Real Madrid the following year, winning two Champions League titles.
